Velocity of Dreams
A Series of Series
A small format “series of series” using decorative Japanese paper as background. Each is a series of 4 (one sheet of the decorative paper, quartered). Collaged on these patterned backgrounds are my black ink strokes and small elements cut from Japanese Chiyogami paper.
Each: 9 x 12″
One thread through my work is working from an unapologetically female position. I have made work about our bodies “Vulva Series” and about our experiences “Madwomen & Murderesses.” In these series, the small format carries intense, almost cloying decorative patterns. Intentionally “hyper-feminine,” they push a feminine voice past what feels like “acceptable limits.”
Support Papers: These are Asian decorative papers, chosen for their small repeat, limited palette, and decorative presence.
Black Ink Elements: In this and my other collages, the black ink strokes are executed on light blue, Arturo Text paper, then cut out, retaining a narrow margin… to create a double edge: from the ink and from the cut paper.
Chiyogami Paper: This traditional Japanese decorative paper is silkscreen printed and can have many colors/layers. The papers used as ground in these series are only 1-2 colors.
Nepalese Decorative Papers: These are very similar to Japanese silk screened paper, but the paper is a rougher, handmade paper.
